Crucian Legacy of the Fourth Estate
111 Fourth Estate Herald Press is an autonomous, multilingual, multi-divisional book publishing home, cultural journal, and commercial print sanctuary rooted in the soil of St. Croix (AyAy), serving the woven regional footprint of the Virgin Islands, which encompasses the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Puerto Rican islands of Vieques and Culebra.
Every story has a beginning, but ours was mapped out by the land, the stars, and the ancestors long before we put ink to paper. Our foundation is built upon a precise convergence of geography, mathematics, and historic alignment.
Exactly 111 years ago today, on November 1, 1915, the legendary civil rights leader, labor organizer, and educator D. Hamilton Jackson illuminated a path for our island communities on the soil of St. Croix by publishing the very first issue of The Herald. He gave our communities a voice, a free press, and an independent platform to share their truth.
Tonight, at exactly 1:11 AM Crucian Quelbe Time (the name we give to Atlantic Standard Time), that living legacy is beautifully continued. We awaken this press on November 1st—D. Hamilton Jackson Day, Liberty Day.
Beyond the sacred geometry of the numbers, our presence is deeply rooted in this day of liberation, festival, and community solidarity. Just as our ancestors gathered to celebrate a newly won voice and a connection to the freedom of the land, we gather tonight to accept our ancestral torch, using its light and warmth to serve the modern sustenance of our stories.
Historically, the press has been called the "Fourth Estate"—an unofficial branch of society that serves as a voice for the everyday people. For us, this is not a platform for judgment, monitoring, or division. 111 Fourth Estate Herald Press stands as a collaborative partner in our community. This is a return to Mother, Mama, Matrix, to the rhythms of Quelbe, and to a beautiful everything-from-scratch livity riddim.
True sovereignty means honoring our own local resources, our own ink, and our own paper. By combining a publishing home for creative works that are by Virgin Islanders and for Virgin Islanders, a cultural journal for communal gathering, and a self-contained commercial printing production sanctuary right here on St. Croix, we nurture the voices of the archipelago. We are leading and guiding our community back to ancient wisdom, beneficial ancestral ways, and mutual cooperation. We choose to uplift, to heal, and to cultivate stories together in the true spirit of Liberty Day.
